Understanding Net Balances

Many data and indicators in this dashboard are derived from or expressed as net balances, a concept widely used in surveys, economic analysis, and business reporting to summarize sentiment or trends within a group.

Net balance is calculated as the difference between the percentage of respondents (or data points) reporting a positive change and those reporting a negative change. This figure simplifies data, making trends and shifts easier to interpret and understand at a glance.

Interpreting Net Balance Figures:

  • Positive Net Balance: Indicates more positive than negative responses, with higher values reflecting stronger positivity.

  • Negative Net Balance: Indicates more negative than positive responses, with lower values reflecting stronger negativity.

  • Zero Net Balance: Suggests a balance between positive and negative responses, indicating neutrality, stability, or potential stagnation.

Net balance values range from -100 to 100, offering a standardized scale to gauge the direction and strength of sentiment or change.
